Hurricane Preparedness

.
I read your article regarding state money to install hurricane shutters [see “Hurricane Preparation: Hope for the Best but Plan for the Worst,” July/August issue, page 52]. What are the criteria for receiving help, and where I can get more information?

Editor’s Note: The Hurricane Damage Mitigation Program, created by the 2006 Florida Legislature, offers free home inspections by qualified hurricane-mitigation inspectors to eligible homeowners. The Florida Department of Financial Services is accepting applications through Nov. 15, 2006, for the free home inspection that must be done before matching funds can be distributed. To apply online, go to www.mysafefloridahome.com. If you have questions about the program, call (800) 342-2762.

Realtors® Are Good for Politics
I thoroughly enjoyed the article “Public Policy: Realtors® in Office” [April issue, page 20]. As a former schoolteacher and commercial Realtor, I believe that Realtors bring an important business background to the field of politics, and it was interesting to see that covered.

Sellers: Keep It Real
I’ve been selling real estate in the Miami Beach area for the past 15 years, and I believe that the biggest obstacle we’re going to face is getting sellers to stop the madness. It’s easy to demand the highest price available with no regard for the buyer’s astronomical new mortgage, newfound taxes with a whopping $25,000 homestead exemption and high insurance costs.

If we all stay real and have a regard for the next in line we’ll be fine. We still live in Paradise.
