Do private beachfront homeowners expect too much?
Editor, Regarding “Who Owns the Beach?” (http://www.floridarealtors.org/NewsAndEvents/article.cfm?id=225683) (The article questions private beach ownership after government extends the shoreline): I have a question for beachfront homeowners’ attorney Papalas: Who took the beach away? Who put it back? Why? If some government preserved or protected the homes, then the homeowners should say: “Thank you, State, for making a public beach that protects my home.” If the homes were not in jeopardy, the affected homeowners should say: “Hey State! Why did you put this public beach in front of what used to be my private beach?” Heck of an expensive “pretext” isn’t it, Mr. Papalas? Did the taxpayers really want to shell out that much dough to be able to walk in front of 6.9 miles of private beachfront homes? It’s going to be fun to read the Supreme Court decision on this one. After all is said and done; isn’t it kind of stupid to have a deeded description where the property that’s being described can change in size and shape overnight with a few puffs of wind – and maybe some crashing surf? Don’t forget – this is a double edged sword. Public lands (waters) are saddled with the same absurdities. Ronald J. Welebny, P.A., C.I.P. The King Group Fort Myers |
