NEW YORK – Jan. 30, 2014 – U.S. homes are becoming “smarter,” and real estate agents must educate themselves on the trend if they want to successfully show and sell “green” properties.
To speak intelligently about smart homes, agents should become experts on embedded intelligence and other technology used in smart homes. The fastest way: Spend time with owners or contractors who are learning the software.
Property practitioners also should try to embrace smart-home technology personally; and if they have not yet reached that stage, they should at least be able to talk about the benefits, such as saving money on heating and cooling costs by using a smart thermostat, or checking on the security of their home remotely.
Lastly, real estate agents selling smart homes should recognize the comfort level of their buyer clients. The technology can be a selling point for some house-hunters but may put off others. If an agent puts together a brief, step-by-step guide, it can simplify the process.
