CHICAGO – Feb. 6, 2014 – When a home sale and the end of marriage go hand-in-hand, Realtors must show sensitivity but also understand the situation’s unique financial and legal complexities.
A real estate professional who understands problems faced by divorcing couples can provide step-by-step guidance to help the sellers protect themselves legally and financially.
Pam Theroux, a sales associate with Marin Modern Real Estate in California, has been working with divorcing spouses for the past eight years. If dealing with two sellers, she advises agents to always communicate with both equally and avoid holding meetings that exclude either party.
Additionally, Theroux cautions agents not to actually dispense legal advice. Realtors instead should refer their clients to attorneys or financial planners to address legal questions, financial matters and tax issues.
