HUD awards $1.8 billion for public housing

WASHINGTON – March 20, 2014 – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded nearly $1.8 billion to public housing authorities in all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The money is earmarked for “major large-scale improvements to the nation’s 1.1 million public housing units.”

Of the $1.8 billion, Florida will receive $48,363,969 divided among 79 providers. Awards range from $11 million for Miami-Dade County to $11,000 for Gilchrist County.

The grants come through HUD’s Capital Fund Program, which provides annual funding to about 3,100 public housing authorities to build, repair, renovate and/or modernize their public housing.

“This funding is critically important to public housing agencies as they work to provide the best housing possible for their residents,” says HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan. “While the funding we announce today will never be enough to meet the tremendous backlog of capital needs, HUD will be working closely with the Congress to expand efforts to generate about $6 billion in private investment for the recapitalization of public housing.”

According to HUD, the nation loses about 10,000 public housing units each year, primarily due to disrepair. A 2011 HUD study found that the nation’s 1.1 million public housing units face an estimated $25.6 billion in large-scale repairs.

Unlike routine maintenance, capital needs are extensive improvements required to make the housing decent and economically sustainable, such as replacing roofs or updating plumbing and electrical systems to increase energy efficiency.
