It’s absurd to ‘build our way out of the recession’ Editor, I find the mentality of so many of my fellow professionals completely absurd. “We can build our way out of this,” or, “We need to build more to create jobs,” and, “If we don’t build, we will have to have other industries to create jobs.” There is “a large inventory to sell, lots that are already zoned,” so on and so forth. But build, baby, build! What we don’t have is a school system that creates educated people to work in the 21st century, or an insurance industry able to pay claims when a major storm hits. But let’s cut taxes more even though we don’t have a system in place that works. Do we really need police, teachers and trash collectors? We, as professionals, need to stop being narrow-minded and self-centered. We can’t forget that we’re a big part of growth management and stewards of Florida’s natural resources. Kym A.
