Crist talks trade and real estate in Russia

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – July 22, 2008 – Gov. Charlie Crist met with the American Chamber of Commerce to discuss real estate investment and expanding trade between Florida and Russia. Governor Crist encouraged investment in Florida in the areas of real estate and foreign direct investment, and welcomed assistance in opening doors for Florida exports to Russia.

It’s part of the governor’s third international trade mission, and 2007 FAR President Nancy Riley, International Operations Chairman John Mike, FAR Vice President of Public Policy John Sebree and Director of International Operations and Research Vani Ungapen accompanied Crist to represent Florida’s Realtors. Also in attendance were Florida House of Representatives Speaker Designate Ray Sansom and Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty.

“The governor has brought much needed visibility throughout Europe to Florida’s commercial and residential real estate market,” says Sebree. “Investment capital is flush and our market is clearly being seen as one of value to its Russian investors.”

“The potential for Florida business in Russia can hardly be overestimated,” Crist adds. “I am proud to represent the Sunshine state in the earliest stages of what will surely become a strong and mutually beneficial relationship.”

Executive Director Maria Chernobrovkina leads the American Chamber of Commerce in St. Petersburg. The Chapter has grown to a membership of 169 and held a total of 85 events in 2007. The total amount of members’ investments into the economy of the Northwest Region had exceeded $5 billion.

“Governor Crist’s presence in St. Petersburg is an important step in accelerating the importation of Florida products and technologies to Russia,” says Maxim Kalinin, Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in St. Petersburg. “He is among the first in a growing number of U.S. public sector leaders who are recognizing the size and strengths of the Russian markets.”
