NAR’s Pending Home Sales Index rose 3.2 percent in March, an increase NAR credits largely to first-time homebuyers taking advantage of low-interest rates and the $8,000 federal tax credit. According to NAR, the upswing would have to repeat over the next few months to consider it an official rebound.

NEW YORK – June 24, 2008 – The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index declined in June, following a trend of several months. The Index now stands at 50.4 (1985=100), down from 58.1 in May. The Present Situation Index, which gauges consumers’ current attitudes, decreased to 64.5 from 74.2 while the Expectations Index, which gauges consumers’ attitudes for the future, declined to 41.0 from 47.3 in May.
 
Housing starts and building permits decline in May
WASHINGTON – June 17, 2008 – The Census Bureau reported this morning that May housing starts fell by 3.3 percent compared to April numbers. Privately-owned housing starts in May were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 975,000 compared to the revised April estimate of 1,008,000. Compared to May 2007, starts declined 32.1 percent.

WASHINGTON – April 16, 2008 – Housing construction in March dropped 11.9 percent below the February rate, the U.S. Census Bureau and HUD announced today. Privately owned housing starts were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 947,000, a decline of 36.5 percent below the revised March 2007 rate of 1,491,000.
