Homeowners Covet Spiral Staircases With a Twist

Advanced technology has allowed designers to create staircases that resemble works of art. Do-it-yourself staircase kits start at $1,000.

NEW YORK – Spiral staircases are rising in popularity but are no longer just for libraries.

Made of wood, stone, or plaster, these staircases are sculptural statement pieces in penthouse and estates, and many of these staircases are taking on unconventional shapes.

Spiral staircases are often circular, but these staircases are now morphing into helical staircases that twist in imperfect loose coils and can be curved. Do-it-yourself spiral staircase kits start at about $1,000, and custom staircases can cost up to $150,000.

Canadian architect Heather Dubbeldam said that "organic modern" spiral staircases have become increasingly popular since the pandemic, evoking a sense of wellness using natural materials and neutral color palettes.

Bethany Gale of Stonehill Taylor, an architecture and design firm in New York City, added, "You're seeing the boundaries pushed of what that spiral staircase can be exactly."

In the last two decades, advanced computing has made sculptural staircases even more possible, and designers say that these staircases also need lighting that complements them from all angles.

"Lighting is incredibly important. If you're going to make this investment, make sure that it really stands out as a piece of art," said Gale.

Lights can be along the base of the staircase, within the treads, under the handrails, or even come down from the ceiling from a dangling light fixture.
