Lego-Style Bricks Used to Build Apartments
Interlocking bricks made from recycled materials were used to construct Lakewood Village in Palm Springs. The materials are rated to withstand a Category 5 hurricane.
PALM SPRINGS – Coastal Construction in Palm Beach County is using building materials that resemble Legos to construct 100 apartments in Lakewood Village over two months, WPTV reported.
"We can build these buildings in about half the time of a traditional job. It's greener. It's about 98% more green than traditional materials, and it is less expensive," said Patrick Murphy, executive vice president of Coastal Construction.
The company, which patented the Renco housing concept, says that the building materials are cheaper and easier to build with. The interlocking bricks are made from recycled glass fibers, recycled plastic, resin and stone.
"The tools for the day are a rubber mallet and a glue gun. That's it. There is no heavy machinery. There's no cranes. It's a very simple product to build out of," he said.
Eight weeks and 11 people were all that were needed to complete the apartment construction project, which was finished off with traditional stucco. Coastal Construction is the first in the U.S. to develop and patent the housing concept.
The building materials are rated to withstand a Category 5 hurricane.
