Your sphere isn’t dying; You’re just boring them.
Why your past clients went quiet-and how to win them back.
You’ve got hundreds, if not thousands, of people in your database. Past clients, friends, family and neighbors. You’ve been sending them newsletters, market updates and holiday outreach. And yet, when they sell or someone asks for a recommendation, your name doesn’t come up. Instead, that referral goes to the agent who DM’d them on Instagram—or the one their kid’s soccer coach suggested. Ouch!

The wallpaper problem.
Here’s the hard truth: Your sphere isn’t dying. They’re just not thinking about you. When you first put up new wallpaper, you notice it. But after a few weeks, you stop seeing it. That’s exactly what’s happening with your sphere outreach. That monthly newsletter you’ve been sending for eight years? Wallpaper. The “just checking in” email you send every quarter? Wallpaper. Your contacts are ignoring you because you’ve given their brain nothing new to process.
The fix is becoming relevant again. And that relevance doesn’t come from frequency; it comes from value. Here’s how:
1. Stop marketing, start mattering.
Instead of sending broad, generic market data, hyper-localize your content to the neighborhoods where past clients live. Become the agent who answers, “What’s my house worth right now?” and you’ll go from wallpaper to essential reading.
2. Make the call.
Pick up the phone. Not to pitch. Not to ask for referrals. Call to have an actual conversation. Be a person first and an agent second.
3. Host something worth attending.
A summer movie night, a shredding event or a neighborhood cleanup can give people a reason to show up and position you as a community leader, not a salesperson.
4. Reactivate, don’t resurrect.
Start with your 20 most valuable dormant relationships. Reach out personally, one at a time, human to human. Your past clients gave you one of the biggest financial transactions of their life. They deserve more than an algorithm-delivered monthly email.
Your sphere isn’t dead. It’s just asleep. The alarm clock is you,
showing up in a way that actually matters.
