Feel Like a Career Shift? Talk to Loved Ones

It’s tough to launch a new business or rise in the ranks – but not just for you. It’s not success if your family doesn’t pick up slack and cheer from the sidelines.

NEW YORK – Realtor Christy Murdock says before embarking on a major career change such as launching a business or taking on a leadership role, a real estate agent’s first step is a conversation with their significant other to ensure they’re on the same page. Their support simplifies the planning process and will help them deal with future challenges.

To make goals achievable, agents should turn to people who have reached the level they’re striving towards and ask about things such as working hours, stress levels and managing the day to day schedule. Note: Taking on a leadership role may consume large amounts of time and energy.

Agents with children need to include them in the communication process to help them feel like they’re part of the process. Children should also be given a chance to ask questions.

Parents should also explore the likely financial and social impacts of a career change with priority given to the family’s concerns while monitoring their needs.

In addition, agents need to analyze their own needs and personal priorities, and they should identify any non-negotiables.

Ideally, an agent’s professional obligations should be arranged in a way that also takes into account personal and family priorities that include big events but also everyday tasks, such as picking up a child from school each day, attending religious services or dining together every evening as a family.
