Design Trends Driving Buying Decisions for 2026

A new survey shows buyers are focusing on design for 2026, favoring calming paint colors, flexible layouts, quality finishes and curb appeal over square footage alone.

MADISON, N.J. — A growing number of home buyers say design features, not just price or location, are shaping their home search for 2026, according to new research from Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate.

A survey found nearly 40% of prospective buyers place paint colors among the biggest influences on their first impression of a home, while another third said color choices matter “a lot.” Earth-toned palettes and natural neutrals are especially resonating with buyers who want a calmer, more grounded feel. The company outlined six design trends influencing buyer decisions:

  1. The new starter home: Starter homes are no longer just about affordability. As the average age of the first-time homeowner nears 40, today's buyers are shifting their priorities, seeking spaces that balance smaller footprints with natural beauty and intentional design. Finding a home that feels personal and truly like home is the top priority for nearly half of buyers.
  2. Paint colors that sell: Color is now a dealmaker, with 40% of buyers saying paint color strongly shapes their first impression, and another third says it catches their attention. Buyers are gravitating toward calming, earth-inspired hues and classic neutrals that elevate interiors and exteriors, making the right shade a critical factor in perceived value.
  3. The influence of influencers: Social media is shaping real-world wish lists. Features like curated pantries, cozy reading nooks and handcrafted kitchens are moving from viral posts to must-have home elements.
  4. Layout matters: Square footage alone doesn't cut it. Buyers want homes that work harder with 86% saying flexible layouts help them see past size, favoring designs with seamless flow and adaptable spaces for work and family.
  5. Craftsmanship counts: Quality craftsmanship is back in focus. Custom millwork, natural materials and artisanal finishes deliver character and longevity, qualities today's buyers are willing to invest in.
  6. Curb appeal 2.0: First impressions matter more than ever as nearly half of buyers won't buy a home that doesn't feel right the moment they walk in, and that emotion often begins at the curb. Today's curb appeal trends lean toward simplicity, with native landscaping, organic finishes, and inviting entries that feel balanced, not overwhelming.
