Citizens Insurance Sees Drop in New Lawsuits
New laws impacting insurance lawsuits may be helping. State-run Citizens says it received 200 fewer monthly lawsuits Jan. to June than it did last year.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – State-operated Citizens Property Insurance Corp. was served with 4,711 lawsuits during the first sixth months of 2023, a decrease of about 200 lawsuits per month compared to the same period in 2022, according to information posted on the Citizens website.
For the first half of 2023, Citizens averaged about 785 lawsuits received per month from January through June, compared to an average of 985 during the first six months of 2022.
As of June 30, Citizens had 19,051 pending lawsuits, slightly less than the 19,139 cases at the same point in 2022, according to the information, which will go before the Citizens board’s Claims Committee on Sept. 12. Some of those pending lawsuits were first received in earlier months.
Citizens and other insurers have long blamed lawsuits for driving up costs in the industry. During a December special legislative session, lawmakers took a series of steps to try to help limit lawsuits.
