Florida DBPR Warns of Verification Scam

Licensed business owners should be cautious of scam emails and calls asking for personal details such as driver’s licenses and business information.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation is warning licensed business owners, including real estate agents, to be aware of potential verification scams.

Scammers have been sending out suspicious emails that appear to be from the DBPR asking for a copy of the recipient’s driver’s license, business EIN and link to the business website. The fraudulent email warns of license suspension, penalties, fines and other enforcement actions for failing to provide the information.

“If you receive such an email, we recommend that you DO NOT click on any links or respond to it with any “personal identification information”, which is defined under section 817.5685, Florida Statutes, as a person’s social security number, official state-issued or United States-issued driver license or identification number, alien registration number, government passport number, employer or taxpayer identification number, Medicaid or food assistance account number, bank account number, credit or debit card number, and medical records,” the DBPR said.

Department officials said DBPR emails will only come from @myfloridalicense.com. The department never asks for personal information via email. To verify an email is from DBPR, contact (850) 487-1395.

The department also said some business owners are receiving fraudulent calls impersonating DBPR customer service callbacks. Officials provided the following information for staying vigilant:

  • Callbacks are only provided upon the request of our customers.
  • Our agents will always ask you about the nature of your call and how they may be of assistance when they call you. Our agents will not know the nature of your call until they speak with you.
  • Our agents will not call you for payments to expedite your application.
  • All payments can be securely made using your online account if you do not want to make a payment over the phone.
