Outdoor Updates That Can Help Homes Sell

Real estate agents say small landscaping updates can make a difference before listing. These simple fixes can improve curb appeal and help homes stand out online.

NEW YORK — Outdoor improvements are often recommended before a home is listed as curb appeal shapes buyers' impressions before they enter the property.

Real estate professionals say basic lawn care should come first, including mowing, reseeding bare spots, trimming overgrown bushes and removing weeds to present a well-maintained exterior.

Other commonly suggested updates include adding fresh mulch for visual contrast in listing photos, pressure washing siding and walkways to remove dirt or mildew, and refreshing the front entry with simple touches, such as updated house numbers or potted plants.

Strategic planting can also improve views from inside the home, while defined outdoor living areas and landscape lighting may help buyers envision how the yard can be used. Simplifying outdoor spaces can help keep the focus on the property and make it easier for prospective buyers to imagine themselves living there.
