Florida builders file 6,127 home permits in July
Residential construction represented nearly $2.2 billion in July, even as permit volume declined 18% from June. Tampa’s leading builders posted the highest combined regional activity.
Florida builders filed 6,127 residential construction permits with a combined construction value approaching $2.2 billion in July, reflecting activity across the five major regions tracked by HBW.
July’s permit count was 18% lower than June, when builders filed 7,477 permits valued at $2.676 billion. Both monthly totals cover Tampa, Southwest Florida, Orlando, Jacksonville and Southeast Florida, making them directly comparable.
The decrease followed a 17% month-over-month increase in June, showing how quickly Florida’s monthly construction activity can change.
July’s regional picture
- Tampa: Approximately 220 builders were active. The five highest-volume builders filed 710 permits with a combined construction value of about $243.8 million, including in The Villages.
- Southwest Florida: More than 310 builders were active. The five regional leaders accounted for 689 permits valued at a combined $163.6 million.
- Orlando: Just over 150 builders were active. The five leaders filed 536 permits with a combined value of $188.8 million.
- Jacksonville: More than 120 builders were active. The five leaders accounted for 384 permits valued at a combined $87.5 million.
- Southeast Florida: Approximately 120 builders were active. The five leaders filed 370 permits with a combined value of $127.2 million.
Tampa’s five leading builders recorded the greatest combined permit volume and construction value among the regional groups. Orlando was the only region where each of the five leaders had an average construction value above $330,000. Southeast Florida recorded the highest individual average among the regional leaders at more than $515,000.
Statewide, the three highest-volume builders accounted for 1,917 permits, or more than 31% of July’s total.
The figures show that Florida’s new-home construction market can look very different from one region to another. Those distinctions can help agents give buyers a clearer picture of the construction volume and types of new homes taking shape in their local markets.
