AI and home automation expected to reshape daily living within 20 years
Artificial intelligence and home automation are reshaping how homes function, from keyless entry and smarter kitchens to lighting, climate control, sleep tracking and bathroom health features that respond more directly to daily routines.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and home automation are expected to reshape daily life across the house over the next two decades, making many of today's premium features more common.
Entering a home may no longer require a key, as the front door will rely on keypads or sensors, cameras and AI to open doors automatically. The changes may be most visible in kitchens, where appliances could disappear into counters and cabinetry and meal planning becomes more automated.
Søren Rye, president and CEO of Miele USA, said, "Say you have some things in your refrigerator that are expiring in two days. The refrigerator won't only alert you, but “come up with recipes that utilize them."
Ali Malkawi, a professor of architectural technology at Harvard, adds that current underfloor heating systems will give way to walls radiating heat and using thermally sensitive materials. AI will automatically adjust temperatures by anticipating homeowners' activities.
Meanwhile, LED lighting will improve to mimic natural light throughout the day, helping owners maintain their circadian rhythms. Bedrooms are moving further into the wellness category through sleep tracking and personalized climate controls, while bathrooms are taking on a larger role in health monitoring and personal care.
From room to room, the home will likely be being designed to respond more actively to daily routines and needs.
