Using Layered Lighting to Elevate a Home
Designers say layered task, accent and ambient lighting can make rooms feel larger and more welcoming for a simple staging strategy that instantly boosts appeal.
NEW YORK — Lighting plays a bigger role in home design than many people realize. "Good lighting design can make a home feel more spacious, highlight architectural features and design elements, and even impact mood and well-being," said Jamie Young, president and founder of Jamie Young Co.
Designers say layering task, accent and ambient lighting helps create warmth, comfort and balance in any space.
- In living rooms, a mix of ceiling lights and lamps prevents shadows, while dimmers let homeowners adjust brightness for any occasion.
- Kitchens and bathrooms benefit from well-placed under-cabinet and mirror lighting that keeps spaces bright and functional. Under the cabinet lighting is best served by LED strip format with a diffuser on it, according to designers.
- In bedrooms, soft light and bedside controls add comfort and ease, and staircases can stand out with sconces or statement fixtures.
Experts add that experimenting with bulb color, placement and fixture style can bring out a home's personality and make each room more inviting.
