Florida leads national snowbird rankings
Florida claims 63 of the nation's top 100 snowbird destinations, with Winter Haven and Lakeland leading as affordability and lifestyle shape winter housing choices.
Florida isn't just welcoming snowbirds this winter. It's practically rolling out the welcome mat across the state.
A new StorageCafe study shows that inland communities, affordable housing and everyday conveniences are giving winter visitors plenty of reasons to explore more of the Sunshine State. Sixty-three Florida cities rank among the nation's 100 best snowbird destinations for 2026-27, with Winter Haven and Lakeland claiming the top two spots.
StorageCafe evaluated nearly 500 cities nationwide based on housing costs, seasonal rental availability, weather, healthcare, recreation and everyday expenses.
Florida's top performers
Six Florida cities cracked the national top 10:
- No. 1 Winter Haven: Lakes, golf and seasonal housing make this inland community a standout.
- No. 2 Lakeland: About one-third of rentals are designated for seasonal use, with Tampa and Orlando within easy reach.
- No. 5 Vero Beach: Coastal living and plenty of seasonal housing options.
- No. 6 Hollywood: South Florida beaches, walkability and convenient airport connections.
- No. 9 Clearwater: Gulf Coast beaches, recreation and Tampa Bay amenities.
- No. 10 Lake Wales: A quieter, more affordable alternative, with average rents near $1,100.
Florida's strong showing stretches statewide. Sarasota (No. 11), Bradenton (No. 12), Tampa (No. 15), Ormond Beach (No. 20), Fort Myers (No. 35), Ocala (No. 39), Pensacola (No. 56) and Cape Coral (No. 100) also made the list.
Lake City ranked as Florida's most affordable destination among the national top 100, placing 18th on the study's separate affordability measure.
It's not just about sunshine
"Affordability is one of the most important factors, but snowbirds are increasingly thinking about affordability in terms of overall value rather than simply looking for the cheapest destination," said Dr. Xiaoxiao Fu, an associate professor at the University of Central Florida.
That puts healthcare, amenities and transportation alongside home prices when comparing communities.
For snowbirds considering a longer stay or a second home, the conversation isn't just about finding sunshine. It's about finding a Florida community that fits their lifestyle and their budget.
