Want a Real Estate Career? Avoid Common Pitfalls

Start by picking the right real estate school, then learn as you go and study for exams. Once licensed, pick a brokerage with a culture that fits your personality.

NEW YORK – How do you get started in the real estate industry?

Prospective agents should be aware of some licensing mistakes made by others before you.

First, don’t pick the wrong real estate school. Find a professionally accredited school, many of which offer online pre-licensing courses designed to fit learners’ schedules. Once enrolled, attend classes, pay attention and study for exams.

Agents should also know Florida’s eligibility requirements.

Although real estate exam prep programs aren’t mandatory as part of pre-licensing coursework, aspiring licensees shouldn’t skip them – they often give pre-licensees the confidence to pass the state exam on the first go.

The final problem for some new licensees comes after they get their real estate license: Signing on with the wrong brokerage.

Before signing on with a broker, new agents should find out:

  • whether a brokerage’s culture fits them and offers support
  • whether the business has a broker who can mentor them through their first year
  • whether the brokerage supplies leads and has a sufficiently large market to provide the agent with business
  • and, of course, how the commission split system works
