Helping Bedrooms Show Better With Easy Upgrades
With budgets of $500, $1,000 or $5,000, modest bedroom updates like paint, bedding and window treatments can improve how a home shows.
NEW YORK — Is your bedroom feeling a little tired, cluttered or just meh?
A revamp doesn't have to mean a total renovation or a massive price tag. Whether you're working with a modest budget or ready to splurge a little, there are plenty of ways to give your personal sanctuary a fresh, stylish vibe.
Tamara Kuykendall of Did You Say Remodel has a few ideas for realistic transformations homeowners can achieve at $500, $1,000 or $5,000, along with insider tips to maximize style, function and comfort.
$500: Big impact, small budget
"When you're working with a $500 budget, the key is to focus on what makes the biggest visual impact for the lowest cost," Tamara said.
At this price point, projects are totally attainable by playing with paint, lighting, upgraded hardware, basic décor, peel-and-stick accents, or even small organization units. Don't underestimate how far deep cleaning and decluttering will go at this price point, either!
Tamara's top two recommendations? Paint and bedding.
"Fresh paint just feels good! It can change the entire mood of your room and give you a base to build all your future improvements," she said.
Bedding is another game-changer – mixing textures in your sheets, throws and pillows can add depth and personality instantly.
Tamara also said that lighting is huge – even something as simple as adding a lamp for a cozy nook can brighten and refresh a corner.
Changing out the hardware on your furniture adds character. Bringing in other metals or wood elements can enhance your bedroom and play up different textures.
$1,000: Style meets function
Once you reach a $1,000 budget, the focus shifts to functional, stylish pieces.
"Window treatments are a great place to start," Tamara said. Floor-to-ceiling curtains can add a level of drama and sophistication you didn't know your space was capable of.
Other smart investments include a new piece of furniture, a wardrobe organizer, or an oversized mirror.
"Oversized mirrors make a space feel larger, and the frame can have the same impact as changing your hardware – introducing wood or metal elements that make a statement," she said. At this level, you're starting to balance aesthetic upgrades with practical improvements, giving your bedroom a polished, cohesive feel.
$5,000: Luxe and transformative
For those with a $5,000 budget, the sky's the limit. "At this point, you can really transform your space," Tamara said. You could create an accent wall out of wood or tile, splurge on a bold upholstered headboard, or mix and match furniture instead of sticking to a single collection.
Electrical upgrades, such as adding wall sconces or automated lighting, can elevate the space while also enhancing convenience.
Custom window treatments, high-quality rugs, or even new flooring become realistic options.
Layered lighting – ambient, task and accent – is a game changer.
This budget also allows for attention to long-term value. Flooring, smart home wiring, and custom closets not only enhance daily living but also add to resale value.
Avoid these common mistakes
Even on a small budget, it's easy to misstep if you don't know your space.
"Take measurements and understand your exact layout before you start buying anything. It's always a shame when you find the perfect item, get it home, and it doesn't fit," Tamara said.
DIY projects are perfect for paint, basic décor swaps, peel-and-stick wallpaper, and simple furniture assembly.
Professional help is recommended for electrical installs, custom carpentry or built-ins, flooring that requires subfloor leveling, and any work involving structural changes. Knowing when to DIY versus when to hire a pro can save you time, money and frustration.
Tamara shares some smart ways to stretch your budget: shop holiday sales or warehouse clearances, mix high- and low-cost items, and use sample cans of paint for accent walls instead of full gallons. Secondhand or marketplace furniture can also be refinished to give you a high-end look without the high-end price.
What's trending?
"Warm, earthy neutrals, textured walls like slats or paneling, layered lighting, and oversized upholstered headboards are all in," Tamara said. "People are drawn to resort-style simplicity – a clean, calm and functional space that feels luxurious without being overdone."
For upgrades that offer the best return in terms of comfort, resale or longevity, Tamara recommends investing in flooring, custom closets, upgraded lighting, high-quality window treatments, a solid bed and mattress, and smart home wiring. These improvements will make your space more enjoyable day to day and more attractive to future buyers.
No matter your budget, the takeaway is simple: make your bedroom a space that makes you happy. "Even small updates can have a big impact," Tamara said.
