Make Staircases a Standout Feature
Designers say stairways can boost a home’s appeal with runners, paint, lighting or wallpaper. Simple updates can stand out in photos and help listings shine.
NEW YORK — Interior designers say stairways can become strong visual selling points when they are treated as part of the home's design instead of as a pass-through.
Adding a runner, statement paint color or wallpaper can give personality to a space that buyers often notice during showings and in listing photos.
"Stairways are a chance to build narrative and tension as you move from one space to the next," interior designer Annie Downing said in the Wall Street Journal.
Simple enhancements such as mirrors, sculptural lighting or coordinated details on landings can help the space feel intentional and cohesive. Interior designer Sarah Henley said, "I want to make the journey on the stairs participatory and exciting."
Designers note that thoughtful improvements that maintain safe clearance, while improving style can elevate the overall impression of a home, helping sellers stand out in a slower market.
